Join The Company

Find out how to join below.

Members join the Company via one of three methods:

Servitude (having served the full term as an apprentice)

Servitude (apprenticeship)

Every Freeman is entitled to take one apprentice; the Master, Wardens and Past Masters are entitled to take two. Apprentices must be aged between 14 – 21 years and the term of indenture is seven years.

Apprentices can claim the Freedom on completion of their indenture, subject to a satisfactory account from their master of their term as an apprentice. The Clerk will provide an application form at the appropriate time, which needs to be completed and returned to the Clerk three months before the term of indenture is completed.

On receipt of an application the Clerk will notify the Court and arrange a date when the Freedom can be taken up, which is done before the whole Court.

The apprentice’s master will pay a binding fee of £60 to the Wax Chandlers’ Charitable Trust, under Gift Aid. On admission to the Freedom by Servitude, a Freeman shall pay quarterage of £125 per year once they have reached the age of 30 years.

Patrimony (having been born to a parent who was Free of the Company at the time of birth)

Patrimony

Individuals who have the right to the Freedom of the Company and City in Right of Patrimony can exercise their right on reaching the age of 21 years; they should not have been bound apprentice. An application form needs to be completed and returned to the Clerk together with:

  • A full birth certificate or adoption order
  • Their parent’s Freedom of the City
  • Their parents’ marriage certificate or evidence of their legitimation in accordance with the law relating to legitimation currently applicable in the United Kingdom
  • Proof of identity for those who have a different name to that on their birth certificate (e.g. married women or names changed by deed)

On receipt of an application the Clerk will notify the Court and arrange a date when the Freedom can be taken up, which is done before the whole Court.

The fine for admission to the Freedom in right of partimony is set at £50, payable to the Wax Chandlers’ Charitable Trust under Gift Aid. On reaching the age of 30 years, a Freeman pays quarterage of £125 to the Wax Chandlers’ Charitable Trust under Gift Aid.

Redemption (by purchase). Those who enter by Servitude or Patrimony have a right to take the Freedom. Certain officers are entitled to become Free of the Company in ‘Right of Trade’ or ‘In Honour’. Occasionally, the Company grants the Freedom ‘Honoris Causa’.

Redemption

Anyone wishing to join the Freedom and cannot do so through Servitude or Patrimony, must apply by completing an application form and sending it, with a letter of support by a Liveryman of three years standing and a copy of their CV, to the Clerk.

If an applicant is not known to any Liveryman the applicant must submit the names of two referees (ideally persons of standing in the City, our trades or their profession), together with a completed application form and a copy of their CV. Most applicants will be requested to attend an interview with two Court Assistants and the Clerk, and final approval is given by the Court. Successful applicants will be notified in writing by the Clerk.

On admission to the Freedom by Redemption, a Freeman will pay a fine of £950 to the Wax Chandlers’ Company. A Freeman shall pay quarterage of £195 per year, a year after joining the Freedom.

The benefits of being a Freeman

Freemen may attend any of the Company’s social functions depending on availability after the Livery’s demand has been met.

Livery

Entry to the Livery is by application and admission will be dependant on the candidate’s ability and desire to contribute to the Company’s activities and its vision for the future. The candidate must have been a Freeman for a year and a day before making an application to be ‘clothed’ and have taken up the Freedom of the City.

An application is made in writing to the Clerk and must be supported by a Liveryman of four years standing. The application will be placed before the Court for approval. Clothing will take place before the Court.

A Freeman, on being clothed a Liveryman, will pay a fine of £1000 to the Company, and quarterage of £300 per year in the January following the year of admission.

The benefits of being a Liveryman

Liverymen can attend any of the Company’s social functions, take part in Livery Forums, sit on one of the Company’s committees and apply to join the Court. A Liveryman is also usually eligible for the Common Hall Register (the right to vote for the Sheriffs and Lord Mayor).

Individuals wishing to apply to join our Company will usually have:

  • an interest in and support for the Company’s values and activities
  • an interest in and knowledge of the City of London, its history, customs and governance
  • an understanding of the relevance and roles of Livery Companies
  • ideally be of an age when joining the Livery makes election to the Court a prospect
